Hi, I’m Nikoel Hytrek, a journalist in Des Moines, Iowa with almost 10 years of reporting experience.

In my career I have led coverage of reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, and the Iowa Legislature. I specialize in digging deep to frame local issues and to explain and connect them to a larger context. In addition to beat reporting, I have experience covering breaking news and events. My storytelling has used writing, videos and graphics.

Outside of reproductive and LGBTQ rights, I have experience covering courts, extremism, elections, government, water quality, and other pressing issues for Iowans.
